Last year I bought a 20 year old Butferring 52"bi head sander. It’s a really fine 2-ton machine and overall very reliable. This is preputer programmable, so not a lot of fuss. However, frequently I get cross-grain marks similar to planer marks, except they're harder to sand out than planer marks would be.

Answer (1 of 6): I would rmend a track saw to anyone who uses panel stock and doesn’t have, or have room for, a table saw. They’re also real handy for full sized sheet stock in the field.

This tool is how I got started in woodworking, and it is also perfectly fine. Sometimes you can get away with cheap brands, and in this case I like working with our craftsman more than the Dewalts our school has in the shop.

Everything left of the saw blade is a sliding table. The fence guide is a 1.5" solid steel bar that runs 52", the thing weighs I think 150#. Hell the whole damn thing is 1100# when its fully assembled!

A better system around $300 - 350. A hybrid saw or some cabinet saws with a good fence can be had for $750 - 800 new. I guess it depends on your priorities and budget. Doug
